Custody issues and threats to a child’s safety

On Behalf of | Apr 20, 2020 | Child Custody

Even when a couple splits up on good terms and both parents play a healthy and active role in their child’s life, dealing with custody matters is tough. However, there are times when custody disputes are especially difficult to deal with. For example, when a child’s well-being is in danger, it is especially important for parents to review their options and do everything in their power to protect their children.

Emergency custody orders

In order to protect their children, some parents are able to obtain emergency custody orders that prevent the other parent from spending time with the child. For example, children who experience physical abuse are often protected through emergency custody orders and parents who have a serious drug or alcohol problem also necessitate this approach. These orders are temporary, however, and the other party will have the chance to defend themselves at a hearing.

Other considerations

Even when parents successfully secure an emergency custody order, their work is not complete. It is pivotal to prepare for additional custody hearings and do everything in your power to convince the court to do what is necessary to protect your child. With other critical divorce issues in play, such as property division and alimony, this is particularly challenging for some parents. However, their child’s well-being is a top priority.

It is also important to talk with your child, if you are able to, and do your best to reassure them. This is often a time of considerable uncertainty and anxiety for children, especially if they have experienced any form of abuse. Our law office understands the pressures that parents in this position face and we go over many other topics related to child custody on our website.
