Our firm handles a range of criminal charges of misdemeanors and felonies. Here is a brief explanation of each, along with examples:

Misdemeanors are crimes that are less serious than many others and carry less severe penalties than felonies, but they still need to be taken seriously. An example of a drug crime that is a misdemeanor is the possession of marijuana for personal use. Those found guilty can be charged with a maximum of one year in jail and fined no more than $6,000. Some other misdemeanor examples include:

  • DUIs (before the fourth DUI in five years)
  • Assault in the third degree
  • Trespass
  • Criminal mischief
  • Disorderly conduct

Felonies are rated from Class D to Class A, with the latter being the felony charge with the most severe punishment. For example, penalties for possession, sale or manufacture of illegal drugs, such as morphine, heroin or opium, range from three years in prison to life without parole and fines from $50,000 to $500,000. Here are some other categories of crimes that can lead to a felony charge:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Theft of property, first degree (property value does not exceed $2,500) and second degree (property value is $250 to $1,000)
